Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need PC Board Analyst?

PC Board Analyst offers you a view of the internal workings of the printed circuit board. The bare board is required to do everything necessary for the product design and if not manufactured correctly, will function for sometime and then fail. The idea behind PCB analysis is to find a defective board or lot before all of the expensive components are inserted. Once the components are placed on the board, it becomes five to ten times more expensive, which makes scrapping poorly manufactured boards far more catastrophic.

Why can't my present supplier do this analysis?

They can, but it may not be on your circuit boards. The printed circuit house will normally do tank analysis and sample analysis daily. Your specific boards may represent this analysis but you have no guarantee. Unfortunately we have seen unscrupulous companies who make up good samples that have nothing to do with their boards, and then send them to their customers. You, the customer, can't be certain whether the sample belongs to the boards you ordered or another board set. By hiring PC Board Analyst, you will receive an impartial evaluation showing the exact makeup of the board you ordered.

Is this something I can do myself?

Yes, but it is expensive. The equipment can easily cost $75,000 and is quite unique. It's uses are limited to doing PCB cross-sectioning and micro-analysis. Personnel is also a cost factor; training alone takes many months to perfect and years to develop analysis expertise.

What does a bad manufactured board look like?

We could tell you what a bad board looks like, but it would be much easier to show you. Click on this to see pictures and explanations of poor quality circuit boards.
